Celebrity gossip heats up as America wonders if Marcia and Jan Brady were more than 'sisters'...
Rumors are swirling about the release of a book by Maureen McCormick, the actress who played Marcia Brady on the TV series The Brady Bunch. Supposedly the book reveals a lesbian affair between the TV sisters Marcia and Jan (played by Eve Plumb).
The New York Post reports that McCormick is going to reveal that she had an affair with her TV sister, Jan, in "Here's the Story." The book is scheduled for release in 2008. However, the book's publisher, HarperCollins denies that McCormick will reveal an affair with Plumb.
"We have to assume it's not true and see what happens when the book comes out," said People magazine assistant managing editor Jess Cagleto to CBS' Julie Chen. "The amazing thing -- this is giant news -- it's been 33 years since the show went off the air. Still, we're so titillated by any misbehavior of the Brady kids."
This rumor has also been reported by World Entertainment News Network, 2Snaps.TV, StarPulse.com and other celebrity blogs.
ABC News also reports the story, via the following quote: "We are verifying that it is not true," said Debbie Styer, senior vice president of group publicity at William Morrow, the book's publisher. "The real story of what happened in [McCormick's] life and behind the scenes of the show will all come out when the book comes out."
Reportedly the book will also address McCormick's most personal secrets, including battles with bulimia, cocaine and depression.
The lesbian affair rumors aren't the first Brady scandal. Barry Williams, who played Greg Brady (the oldest) revealed he dated on-screen mom Florence Henderson in his book "Growing up Brady." Florence Henderson later called the romance "an innocent dinner with a kiss on the cheek." Williams, apparently a popular Brady, also said that he dated McCormick.
"We were fascinated by that, that something gives a lie to the squeaky clean image of the show, is titillating, the idea of Marsha and Jan even more," Cagle said. "And this show had an impact, the way you almost can't anymore because we don't always watch the same shows now."
McCormick's book will also discuss Robert Reed, who played dad Mike Brady and died of AIDS 15 years ago, revealing he was gay, a shock to many.
The website nndb.com reports the following:
"McCormick, playing the Brady`s oldest daughter, was an object of many young men's affections, but she had "a little crush" on Eve Plumb, who played the middle sister Jan. During their time on The Brady Bunch, McCormick and Plumb tried to appear on screen braless under their shirts. Plumb was caught and chastised almost immediately, while McCormick -- being less endowed -- succeeded until a chilly day filming outdoors gave her away. At one point she and costar Barry Williams, who played her stepbrother Greg, slept together."
The Maureen McCormick fan site states that the publisher of the book has denied the affair.
Time will tell, but to be sure- the rumors of the lesbian affair between the Brady sisters will undoubtedly raise sales of the book! Which may be how the rumors started in the first place...
